Updated my drivers as most were old

Updated my drivers as most were old, fixed up the main issue I was having and a couple others I didn't know I was having!

Bricked my computer

Updated my graphics driver now stuck on manufacturer screen. The thing is reading up on this, drivers are a collaboration of the component and motherboard manufacturer. Just blindingly updating drivers based on one or the other is not always ok. Anyway can't use my computer.
*Thanks for your reply but #1 indicating that software cannot do physical harm is true but that's like saying a computer virus can't do any physical harm. The driver made it so windows would not start (stuck on manufacturer screen and according to the manufacturer and Microsoft no access to safe mode). Why is irrelevant but the driver being a red flag should have been apparent as the computer co and windows were both indicating it was up to date. This is where you are abdicating all responsibility leaving me to have to borrow a computer and make a windows reinstall disk which takes hours and hours to reinstall when I need to be working. Maybe this doesn't happen a lot but your product is advertised as done sort of miracle cure and it is not. My computer bricked the first time I used it.

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for your review. Sorry you're having trouble after updating your graphics driver.

This can happen if there's a bug in a driver or if it creates some sort of conflict. All our drivers come direct from your hardware manufacturers (they develop them, we just supply them), and they do their best to minimize bugs and conflicts. But it's impossible for them to test with all possible combinations of hardware and software. Note that all Driver Easy does is install drivers from your hardware manufacturer. If a driver causes problems, it would cause exactly the same problems if you were to manually install it, as opposed to installing it with Driver Easy.

Importantly, drivers can't possibly cause physical harm to your computer hardware. A driver is a piece of software that runs on Windows, so if Windows isn't running, the driver isn't running, and it can't technically do anything, just as Google Chrome and Microsoft Word can't do anything when Windows isn't running. Likewise, drivers only make changes to Windows device settings. They don't make hardware changes, either to your computer or your devices, nor do they change your BIOS settings. The worst a driver can do is cause a device to misbehave (again, only while Windows is running), cause Windows to fail to recognize a device, or prevent Windows from launching normally.

To solve most problems, all you usually have to do is roll back the offending driver (https://www.drivereasy.com/help55/driver-restore/), uninstall it (https://www.drivereasy.com/help55/uninstall-driver/), or roll back Windows to the restore point that Driver Easy created (https://www.drivereasy.com/help55/system-restore/). Sometimes you may need to boot Windows into Safe Mode (https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/how-to-enter-safe-mode-in-windows-10/) to do any of these things. This runs Windows WITHOUT running most of your drivers (only the most basic drivers run in Safe Mode). In most cases, the offending driver can no longer cause problems, because it's no longer running.

Re graphics card drivers being a collaboration between the component manufacturer and the motherboard manufacturer: this depends what you mean by "component manufacturer" and "collaboration"...

1) Chipset manufacturers (e.g. NVIDIA) don't collaborate with motherboard manufacturers to develop their drivers. They develop their drivers to be 'motherboard agnostic', because they want their chipsets to work with as many computers as possible. The only consideration they give to the motherboard is whether it has the required technical specs to be supported.

2) Card manufacturers (e.g. Gigabyte) don't collaborate with motherboard manufacturers to develop their drivers, either. In fact, it's a stretch to say they "develop" their own drivers at all. In reality, they simply repackage NVIDIA's drivers. They may tweak something here or there, but it's still basically the same driver. Importantly, in the context of this discussion, this means their repackaged drivers are, like the chipset manufacturer's drivers, motherboard agnostic.

3) PC manufacturers (e.g. Dell), on the other hand, MAY collaborate with motherboard manufacturers, but they don't change the core behavior of the driver or limit the motherboards it supports. Like card manufacturers, they don't actually develop the base driver; they just repackage the chipset manufacturer's driver and occasionally make some tweaks. They know exactly what motherboards they're pairing their graphics cards with, so it's possible for them to make motherboard-specific tweaks, but those tweaks are very trivial, and usually just gimmicks. e.g. They may tweak the driver so it syncs the color of the ARGB lighting effect of ASUS graphics card with the RGB lighting effect of the motherboard used in that specific PC.

So there's absolutely no problem using the driver developed by the chipset manufacturer in place of the driver developed (repackaged / tweaked) by the card or PC manufacturer. In fact, it's very important to the card and PC manufacturer that their hardware supports the chipset manufacturer's driver, because this means they don't have to support their hardware for as long (i.e. continue updating their drivers for as long). PC manufacturers, in particular, tend to provide only a couple of years of driver support. After that, if you want to update your driver, you MUST use either the card manufacturer's driver or the chipset manufacturer's driver. Eventually the card manufacturer stops updating its drivers too. That's why, for really old devices (more than, say, 5 years old), the only place you can get updated drivers from is the chipset manufacturer.

Long story short, the only important thing to consider when updating your graphics driver is whether it's suitable for your version of Windows and your graphics CHIPSET. The specific brand of card or PC are ultimately unimportant (unless you want the little gimmicks like synced lighting colors!). The device's core functions will all work fine.

Please email support@drivereasy.com if you have any questions.

Kind regards
Glenn

EDIT: I've asked Sophie to reply to your email with assistance on the Safe Mode front. Usually there's a way, but it's not always obvious. Note that there are some extremely rare cases where a driver bug or conflict can prevent the computer from booting into Safe Mode, but this can only happen if the driver is a very low level one (e.g. hard disk controller drivers). We've only encountered this situation once in the last two years - from more than 75,000 support tickets. Note also that if a driver caused this problem, you'd have had the same problem even if you'd installed that same driver manually. Driver Easy doesn't do anything additional; it just downloads and installs drivers that come direct from your manufacturers.

Well I found d that Driver Easy was no…

Hi David,

Thanks for your review.

Sorry Driver Easy hasn't solved your problem yet. It's possible that the problem simply isn't driver-related (e.g. perhaps it's a hardware fault), but before we jump to that conclusion, it would be good to do a bit of troubleshooting.

I've just checked our support system and can see you emailed us 10 times about this problem yesterday. I can see that Sophie replied with some detailed instructions. We didn't hear back from you after that? Did those instructions solve your problem?

In any case, I've just approved your refund. We process credit / debit card refunds within 1 business day. But it may be 5-7 business days before the funds appear in your account, depending on your bank.

Please email support@drivereasy.com if you have any other questions.

Kind regards
Glenn

It's a shame you didn't contact our tech support team for help before you reset your PC. We could have done all of the above for you for free, as part of your Driver Easy Pro subscription.

In any case, please email support@drivereasy.com if you'd like a refund.

Kind regards
